The Greater Grand Rapids Chapter continues to grow and evolve into one of the major contributors in the Mighty Mid-Western region as well as Jack and Jill of America nationally. We are proud of the significance of our programming, community outreach and our unending focus on our national theme of “Power & Potential: Parents Empowering Youth.” We have had the great benefit of reflecting upon the accomplishments of our first chapter president, welcoming our second chapter president, embracing five new mother members into our chapter and the unique opportunity to co-host our Michigan-Ohio Workday Cluster right here in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
As Mothers of the Greater Grand Rapids Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., we uphold the privilege of our heritage, are empowered as mothers and determined to raise children who are intelligent, considerate of others and contributors in the communities they live in. Our teens better known as the Movers and Shakers continue to be a prime example of this and how when you invest into your children, they will give it back to you tenfold.
Our teens were exemplary examples of this when they invited teens from nearby Michigan chapters (Southwestern Michigan and Greater Lansing) to join them in their 2nd Annual Teen Leadership Day held at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan. In addition to completing their financial and leadership modules, teens and tweens enjoyed a networking luncheon and participated in a special workshop to prepare them for their college experience led by Cassonya Carter, Senior Academic for the Office of Student Services Kirkhof College of Nursing at Grand Valley State University.
The teens participated in multiple leadership workshops which were facilitated by members of BLEND, a local professional organization with a mission to foster an environment of growth and belonging, where young professionals of color can connect with each other, develop professionally and contribute to the local community. The presenters were exceptional and highlighted the JJOA financial and leadership module topics of upmost importance to our young leaders. The workshops included:
Financial Leadership: Taking Charge of your Life presented by Shawn Perdue, a local leader in finance
Thinking Ahead: Developing a Financial Plan presented by Brian Parks, a local leader in team building
Stop, Shop Spend: All you need to know about credit presented by Greg Peacock, a local leader in the arts
Risk Taking presented by world-class motivational speaker and author of the best-selling book, “From Success to Significance: The 8 Keys to Achieving any Goal or Dream” Kris Mathis
One of the highlights of the event was having a 2011 alumnus of the Greater Grand Rapids Chapter of Jack and Jill, Evan-Tarence Lauchie’, as a presenter. The Teen Leadership Day was a phenomenal leadership and learning opportunity for the teens and will prove to be one for all of the teens in Western Michigan for years to come. Our teen leadershipassisted with the planning, coordinating logistics, introduction of speakers and hosting the entire day of events. The event was thoroughly enjoyed, extremely informative and highly regarded. In fact, it is becoming a tradition with the Greater Lansing and Southwester chapters each agreeing to host in upcoming programming years.
