The Greater Grand Rapids Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. would like to invite you to support our “Jack and Jill Swims” water safety event scheduled to take place on Sunday, May 5, 2019. Jack and Jill of America, Inc is currently partnered nationally with the American Red Cross, an organization that has helped millions of children and teens learn how to swim, as well as become lifeguards and water safety instructors. With this national partnership with the American Red Cross, our goal is to reduce accidental drownings in marginalized African-American communities nationwide. Recent studies have shown the following:

 

  • Over 350 children die each summer from unintentional drowning.
  • Approximately 1 in 5 people who die from drowning are children 14 and younger.
  • Drowning is the number one cause of death for children aged 1-4.
  • Swimming pool drowning deaths for African-American children aged 5-19 is 5.5 times higher than children from other racial backgrounds.
  • For African-American children aged 10-12, the swimming death rate is a staggering 10 times higher.

          

Faced with these sobering numbers, we are hoping to gain your support to help us kick off our water safety event in which we aim to reach approximately 50 families. Your monetary and/or in-kind donation will help us accomplish the following goals (not limited to):

 

  • Sponsor swim lessons and water safety training to at least 50 children from underserved or underprivileged households.
  • Kick off National Water Safety Month through local advertisement and media, reaching thousands of families throughout the Greater Grand Rapids Area.
  • Water Safety and Swim equipment giveaways (googles, flotation devices, life jackets, swim caps, etc.)
  • Printed informational materials

 

 

Supporters of the event will be recognized in many ways during our “Jack and Jill Swims” Water Safety Event, including acknowledgement from our speakers, your business logo on our signage/ marketing materials, social media “shout outs,” recognition on our website, and inclusion in our press releases and event programs. Please consider contributing to our event and our mission to make a positive impact in our community.
